Artie's film gets lovely notice in Brooklyn!

2007-11-11

After being somewhat snubbed at the actual screening itself - (How? Well, they verified several times that I would be there and then neglected to introduce me to the audience - it took another film director from France, the talented Manuel Schapira, to drag me up to receive the lackluster applause) I found this very lovely, insightful review of the film by Julia Ann Sirmons. Check it out.http://www.newyorkcool.com/archives/2007/June/film-brooklyn.htm

In addition to producing a series of experimental short films under the mtl/ART banner, Potashnik and Babinski co-wrote a screen adaptation of Leonard Cohen’s Beautiful Losers for Cinémaginaire.

New Music by Tony Babinski and Robert Marchand

2001-10-15

We have posted a new piece of music by Tony Babinski and Robert Marchand, called "Baupumn 2".

Tony explains:
"I recorded a piano piece at home called ‘Baupumn’, as one of a series of experiments for what people will someday hear on the ‘Artie’s Film’ soundtrack. It was very skeletal, a kind of bop, Autumnul deconstruction. I sent it to Robert, and he really caught fire. He used bits of the piano piece I recorded and built this hypnotic piece around it.

The original piano was recorded at home, with my Korg u20 synth miked into a Sony Mini-Disc. It was captured directly from the mini-disc to Sound Edit, where I added a few effects and sent it as an MP3 to Robert. He did the rest on Digital Performer and Pro Tools. I think it shows him at his best."

Jacob appears in "Behind-the scenes" Leonard Cohen video

2001-08-27

As some of you already know, Jacob (quite coincidentally) was asked to Production Manage a video for Leonard Cohen by Floria Siggismundi shot at Habitat, of all places. He can be seen talking briefly with Leonard at Habitat at a new site put up in support of L.C.’s new album (see link below). Jacob appears in the third Quicktime video from the right, where Leonard is seen tipping his hat. Jacob is the guy in the red shirt. It’s in the "behind the scenes" section. Tony visited the set briefly. No news about "Beautiful Losers", but a pleasant social call.http://www.leonardcohen.com

Jacob and Tony at work on new mtl/ART film

2001-03-21

Jacob and Tony have been working on a new mtl/ART short called "Artie's Film", which they expect to be out in Fall of 2002 (if not sooner!). Here, for your information and entertainment, is the project description:

"Artie's film" is an homage, in image and sound, to Pulitzer Prize-winning comic book artist Art Spiegelman. The film addresses issues of alienation and declining morality. The appropriated images were filmed in and around Washington Square in New York city in the summer of 1980. They consist of people's faces, children, animals and the facades of surrounding buildings. There is a distinct graphic strategy at work which describes the world of the artist, much as the comic book panel both frames and liberates the content
within. In many images the "framing" is reoriented, challenging the renaissance notion of the "frame" itself.

The viewer is faced with a compelling contradiction; there is a palpable sense of isolation and loneliness in these images of one of the world's most populated cities . The film is a visual manifestation of the cliché, "Alone in a crowd." This duality is explored in depth through the sound score.

The themes worked out in the film are similar to those explored in Spiegelman's work; the effects of the past on the present and future, the still reverberating shock of the Holocaust to the body social and politic,
the workings of fate/chance on the individual, and the abdication of moral responsibility.

Lastly, the film assesses Montreal's aesthetics as they relate to New York, the great metropolis of the 20th century. In his work Spiegelman has reclaimed the figure of the "cosmopolitan," the person who considers the entire world as his rightful heritage and who is unchained by provincial or nationalist concerns. Montreal, in it's embrace of high-minded European, and mass culture American comic book art, and it's polyglot, multi-cultural/linguistic roots, is the cosmopolitan city of Spiegelman's dreams.

Spill Magazine Review

2001-03-11

This review, which recently appeared online, was first published last fall in Spill Magazine of Toronto:

Tony Babinski
music from the mtl/ART project
Scratch N' Sniff Music Inc.
Check Out Their Site!

Compelling, if a bit inaccessible and off the beaten path, this is Tony Babinsky's first CD and the accompaniment to a series of short films by he and his partner Jacob Potashnik under the mtl/ART project moniker. One of these, "Leonard... Light My Cigarette!", the most well-known, received beaucoup airplay on the snooty tv-too-good-for-tv BRAVO station. The release timed to coincide with a screenings of "Dancing About Architecture" the latest in the series which pays homage to a number of luminaries including, obviously, Leonard Cohen.

When things work here, it's the soft contemplative beats, underscoring the spoken word. When things don't work so well, its easy to imagine that its because you are hearing the work outside of its intended context. - James McGarry

Tony talks up Dancing About Architecture and music from the mtl/ART project on the CBC:

2000-01-01

Tony was interviewed for the afternoon drive show on CBC Radio One in Montreal on April 5.

The following is a transcript from the show:

TRANSCRIPT:

MUSIC: INTRO TO DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE, FADES UNDER &

ANNE-LAGAC DOWSON:
Jenette Kelley is in now in with the Arts Report. Jenette! A little new music &funky stuff there!

JENETTE KELLEY:
Yes, that's music from a soundtrack of a film called: Dancing About Architecture. It's a film that's part of the mtl/ART project & Montreal Art Project & a tribute to Montreal artists and Montreal phenomena, this one to dance and architecture, more specifically Habitat 67 with its architect Moshe Safdie. Tony Babinski wrote and co-produced the album, and the short film Dancing About Architecture is playing on Bravo! television all through the month of April and May. It's the fourth in his series of art films about Montreal that he's produced with his partner Jacob Potashnik. And so I asked him where this came from, this idea of the mtl/ART project.

TONY BABINSKI (PRE-RECORDED):
The mtl/ART project got started in 1994 when I was inspired to write a spoken word piece called "Spotting Layton" which was inspired by a true-life encounter I had with Irving Layton in the sauna at the YMCA &

J.K..:
(LAUGHS)

TONY:
& and that came to me in kind of an automatic flash, and I called my friend Jacob Potashnik, who's a film-maker, and asked him if he would be interested in making a short film based on what I'd written. He got very excited about it, and we made it . (This was independently produced, I payed for it myself).

J.K.:
And this was the beginning of the project?

TONY:
This was the beginning of the project that inspired us to make a series of short, experimental films inspired by the work of artists from Montreal, or, you know, adopted by Montreal, or who seem to somehow encapsulate the Montreal experience.

J.K.: (TO A.L.D.)
So one of these films that came out of the project is "Light my Cigarette, Leonard Cohen" (sic.), which has led to a deal to write a movie script for the two partners &

A.L.D.:
And an encounter with Leonard himself &

J.K.:
&exactly. Their latest film, Dancing About Architecture pays tribute to Moshe Safdie and Habitat 67.

TONY (PRE-RECORDED INERVIEW):
We have this kind of obsession with Expo '67.

J.K.
(LAUGHS)

TONY:
There's a real Expo '67 feel in Leonard, light my Cigarette! as well, but particularly in Dancing About Architecture, where we took these different dancers from a variety of ethnic dance troupes and set them against Habitat. It's our homage not only to Moshe Safdie, but to the whole multi-cultural, international spirit that informed the Expo 67 project.

J.K.:
One of the parts of the film talks about the feeling that they were creating a utopia when Habitat 67 was built. Can you tell me a little more about that building?

TONY:
Well, we had the good fortune of interviewing Moshe Safdie himself for the film, and he's on the soundtrack reading from a poetic statement of his own architectural principles. And when he read it to us, it occurred to me that he's not afraid of Utopian thinking. In other words, Habitat itself was planned as a re-invention of urban living. Moshe Safdie is still much concerned with urban lving, how to improve life in cities, and Habitat is an experiment in how you can fit people in high-density areas while respecting their individuality and needs for light, space, harmony &and what was very impressive about Safdie was that in an age which is pretty cynical, right now, he has the courage to think ahead, to think 50 years ahead, or 100 years ahead, and say: how can we improve life?

A.L.D.: (TO J.K.)
You know, that was kind of an inspiring thought about Safdie, but this is kind of a nice art film, it's not just for people like you and I who go to all kinds of art events &

J.K.
Yes, exactly. It's got that great soundtrack, lots of energy &there's dancers from several different countries: Haiti, Korea, Quebec. There's some Scottish dancers, and they all kind of twirl around in space around these blocks of the building.

A.L.D.:
There's lots of movement. There's nothing static about this building, the way they shot it.

J.K.:
& and what he calls & building blocks of beauty: those are Moshe Safdie's words. So it runs for five minutes, it's on the Bravo! channel. It will be screened about three times a week, April and May, between 7:00 and 7:30 in the evening. The films in the collection have also been picked up for distribution outside of Montreal, and the CD is available in record stores.

A.L.D.
Good stuff! Thanks very much for telling us about it. That's Jenette Kelley with the Arts Report.

The following review of "music from the mtl/ART Project" appeared in the Thursday, April 27 edition of the "Montreal Gazette". It was written by T'Cha Dunlevy:

"Montreal native Tony Babinski's first album is a collection of music written by Babinski to accompany his and partner Jacob Potashnik's mtl/ART project - a 'series of films inspired by...artists such as Leonard Cohen, Moshe Safdie, Irving Layton and Cuban music legend Beny Mor.

"It's a rudimentary, poetic foray into the Montreal art comunity's tired, colourful soul, featuring pleas to Cohen (Leonard, light my Cigarette!), an ironic salute to Havana, and various meditations and philosophical musings on the meaning of life under the cross of Mount Royal."
